Racketball Report Week 13

Our first derby game of the year gave a host of players a chance to shine. We extended our team lists to fit in with our many available players.

Heswall Racketeers v Heswall 57’s

Top of the table Racketeers needed to extend their unbeaten run to keep arm’s length from challengers, LCC. Club legend, Richard Stapledon was first out against an improving Chris Moores . Stapo Snr breezed into a 2-0 lead but visions of an early dart to the bar were enough to bring on a collapse of momentum. Chris Moores taking the game 3-2. Lesley Cooley and Tom Mairs then commenced their rivalry and in another close game, Tom took the points for our Racketeers, 3-2.

Craig Beecham is one of the many success stories of the season thus far. He had the mammoth task of taking down club warrior, Paul Smith . Buoyed by the news of Craig playing top spot for Heswall 3 in Jersey, he came out fighting. Smithy though, gives 100% effort every time and won the game 3-2. The return of last season’s player of the year Rob Wright cheered everyone up. He took me on with some well-versed back hands but couldn’t get the tie over the line as I came out a 3-2 winner. That sealed the win for out Racketeers.

Stapo Jnr was then let out to play against Paul Grannon . Paul had a great win last week but couldn’t cope with Matt ’s power drives, as Matt won 3-0. 57’s Stalwart Ged Clark looked in fine form and every bit a number 2 as he fought bravely against Peter Barton . Tied at 1-1 Peter took the last two games to win a vital match. Then came the big guns, with Mike Beecham challenging Tom Clark for the club number 1 spot. Tom was electric and took a deserved lead before Mike took control with his trademark hold, levelling 1-1. Tom then took the next two games in a thrilling affair. We will see more of this match up. Racketeers win 18-10.

Heswall Variety v Xavs

A walkover at 5 let Martin Simpson in at 4. He continued his progress to a seasoned racketball player with a convincing win over the lively Paul Clayton. That left Debutant Dave Breen to make his racketball debut and secure the team win on the night. Dave has been pestering for the opportunity for months – and we love a tryer! Dave made it look easy against Wayne Bedford, 3-0. Mark Evans and Dan Parker then pushed for points against strong opposition but couldn’t make it over the line. Variety win 16-6.

Capitol v Heswall Fury

The ‘Party team’ travelled to Capitol for what looked like a Pizza party! in the aftermath we did eventually recover this score card to see that Steve Patterson recorded a good 3-2 win over the injured Darren McCann. Ross Frisby and Mark Jones secured good wins to secure the overall team win. Kev Ferguson, playing at 2 put in a good performance but eventually ran out of air miles, losing 3-1. That left star man Locky to play the talented Chris Williamson at 1. A tight game but in the end Locky ran out a comfortable winner, 3-2. That gives Fury an 18-7 win.

Player of the week is squash57 convert and nice guy, Martin Simpson!

Derby day again next week, as our Variety team play the Fury!
